RALI Oregon – Substance misuse and abuse during the holiday season

This year, we are proud to have worked with RALI Oregon and our fellow partners to help address the opioid crisis in our state and local communities. RALI Oregon brings together local leaders committed to finding effective solutions and sharing ideas that will make a difference for individuals, families and communities struggling with substance use disorder.

This holiday season, as we spend time with family and loved ones, we all have an opportunity to help raise awareness and prevent misuse and abuse. You can participate by:

  • Taking time to talk to your family and friends about the issue – make sure they understand the dangers related to prescription drug misuse.
  • Keeping all prescription medications at home secure and out of the reach of children. When you are finished using a prescription, safely dispose of any medicine left over.
  • Learning about the warning signs that someone may be misusing opioids.  Early intervention is key to keep misuse from turning into addiction.

You can find helpful information about this issue, safe disposal and warning signs on www.rali-or.org .

If you, or someone you know, is struggling with addiction or recovery, there are many local resources available. Visit www.oregon.gov and search for “community mental health” – for a list of addiction-related services available in each county. As always, if there is a life-threating emergency dial 9-1-1.

Have a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season.
